Littmann CORE Digital: What It Is, How It Works, and Who It's Worth It For

Up to 40x amplification, active noise cancellation, and AI integration via app. Everything to know about the CORE Digital before you decide.

The Littmann CORE Digital is the most advanced stethoscope in the Littmann line, with up to 40x amplification, active noise cancellation, and app-based AI integration. Here's what to know before deciding.

What it is

The Littmann CORE Digital is a cardiology-grade digital stethoscope combining the mechanical base of the classic Cardiology IV with an electronic module attached at the chestpiece. That module adds up to 40x peak-frequency sound amplification, active noise cancellation, and Bluetooth connectivity to the Eko app for viewing and analyzing auscultated sounds.

Unlike other electronic stethoscopes on the market, the CORE Digital keeps its mechanical analog function even when the digital module is off or the battery is dead — so a clinician never loses the basic auscultation tool. If the battery dies mid-shift, the instrument keeps working as a conventional Cardiology IV. It's manufactured by Littmann (a Solventum brand, formerly 3M Health Care) and designed for physicians, residents, nurses, and other clinicians performing cardiac and pulmonary auscultation in high-demand clinical settings.

How up to 40x amplification works

At peak frequency, body sounds reach the examiner's ear up to 40 times more intensely than in passive analog mode. This gain is adjustable across 7 increments via side volume buttons on the digital module, letting the clinician calibrate intensity to the environment and clinical need.

The technology is especially useful for detecting low-intensity murmurs, subtle lung sounds in obese or thick-chested patients, and for clinicians working in loud environments like the ER, ICU, or OR. To activate amplified mode, press the power button on the chest-mounted module; the LED blinks white, indicating the device is active and ready to pair with the app.

"The noise cancellation lets me assess patients in loud environments with confidence, even living with hearing loss." — Heather Skally, RN

How active noise cancellation works

Active noise cancellation (ANC) analyzes ambient sound in real time and electronically attenuates it before it reaches the examiner's ear. It must be activated manually via the Eko app's CORE settings menu — the default configuration ships off.

In practice, ANC matters most in high-noise-pollution scenarios: emergency shifts, ICU beds with monitor alarms, busy hallways, and pre-op rooms. It doesn't eliminate ambient noise entirely, but significantly reduces interference, making cardiac and pulmonary sounds clearer for the examiner. Turning off the digital module also disables noise cancellation.
